Rhetorical Fallacies Rhetoric And Logical Thinking
Rhetorical fallacies are ââ¬Å"errors and manipulation of rhetoric and logical thinking,â⬠as defined by informationisbeautiful.net. Rhetorical fallacies such as affirming the consequent, appeal to pity, and undistributed middle, can be seen in any type of debate, or conversation. Rhetorical fallacies are very apparent in politic related public speaking, as I have observed. This paper will examine three videos from the Meet the Press series and the rhetorical fallacies I identified in these three videos. Senator Sherrod Brown used the two fallacies of jumping to conclusions and affirming the consequent in the video ââ¬Å"Senator Sherrod Brown - Meet The Press.â⬠Informationisbeautiful.net says the fallacy of jumping to conclusions is ââ¬Å"drawing a quickâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In the same video, Kasich uses another fallacy, the straw man fallacy. According to informationisbeautiful.net, is a fallacy that is ââ¬Å"creating a distorted or simplified caricature of your opponentââ¬â¢s argument, and then arguing against that.â⬠In the video, Kasich talks about his views on how he would handle health care and the poor, ââ¬Å"Because we want to stabilize health care and make sure poor people have something, people assume thereââ¬â¢s a motive. Sometimes, people do things because they actually want to help somebody. When we do that, everybody says, ââ¬ËWell, whatââ¬â¢s in it for themââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (7:23). Kasich makes the opposing sideââ¬â¢s argument int o a basic concept which can be easily argued against. He also makes the opposing sideââ¬â¢s argument into something people could easily disagree with. ââ¬Å"Relationship Between Trump and Arpaio Began with Birtherism â⬠is a video with four reporters tell their views on President Trumpââ¬â¢s pardon. There are two fallacies in the video, appeal to tradition, and undistributed middle. Informationisbeautiful.net says appeal to tradition is ââ¬Å"claiming something is true because itââ¬â¢s (apparently) always been that way.â⬠A reporter speaks how America thrived from immigrants.
